Mom, Dad, and my niece Annika all came out for a visit in August. We took a trip out to Hell's Canyon since none of us had ever been. It's the deepest canyon in North America, deeper than the Grand Canyon so we thought we should see it. We stopped on our way in Pendleton, OR where the famous Pendelton Roundup is held and checked out the local sights. Its mostly a very quiet little town of 16,000 people. But it's home to the Pendleton Woolen Mills, the Pendleton Underground and the Pendleton Round up when it gets an influx of 50,000 people for the week of the rodeo. We missed the rodeo by a few weeks, but that was ok since we wouldn't have been able to get a hotel room then!
After checking out Pendleton, we drove on to Clarkston, WA, right next to Lewiston, ID. There was miles and miles of rolling wheat fields on the way there, w/ the occasional field of wind turbines in the distance. Not a whole lot to look at. We caught our Jet boat in Clarkston the next morning and went on a 10 hour tour through Hell's Canyon on the Snake river. I have to say, the scenery was nice, but not varied enough for a 10 hour trip. Everything looked the same and although the canyon is the deepest, it's not like the Grand Canyon with steep cliff walls. It's more like a river running through tall hills since the highest part is far enough back that you never see it from the river. Not the most interesting destination but we had a good time visiting w/ Mom and Dad and Annika.
